Ring by Stephen Baxter

Ring is science fiction, not fantasy, but there's so much in here that a Tolkien fan can love.

Stephen Baxter creates a complex and fascinating world with fantastic things and an epic scope, and some of the best-written and most down-to-earth characters to take us through it. The stories have a great sense of adventure, and a sense of hope in the face of impossible darkness.

In this particular story you go on a journey that takes you to the heart of the universe, with the fate of mankind hanging in the balance, and the hopes and dreams of some of the most endearing characters you're likely to meet.

There are a number of stories that take place in this created universe (the Xeelee sequence), as well as his mammoth trilogy, but Ring is a great place to start.
