The Hunt for Gollum, a new short film inspired by the writings of JRR Tolkien, premiered on May 3, 2009.
No, this has nothing to do with Peter Jackson, New Line Cinemas, or multi-billion dollar budgets. In fact, it is entirely unofficial and unlikely to win the love and approval of big Hollywood.
Instead, it has everything to do with the passion of a group of filmmaker fans that wanted to try their hand at a film based on Tolkien's work.
The Hunt for Gollum will be available in high-definition on May 3rd as a free download at Daily Motion.
Unlike Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings movies, The Hunt for Gollum does not take its premise directly from the pages of Tolkien.
Rather, it takes the bits and pieces of story dropped by Gandalf & Aragorn in The Lord of the Rings and the timeline given by Tolkien in the Appendices.
The script was the brainchild of Chris Bouchard, an independent UK filmmaker, and revolves around Aragorn and his search for the missing Gollum. Check out our exclusive interview with Chris, where he discusses the making & response to the film.
The events in the film take place in the years leading up to those portrayed in The Fellowship of the Ring.
The finished film is 40 minutes long and was filmed entirely on location in North Wales.
